South Asian Weddings and Events

A Kaleidoscope of Tradition
South Asian weddings are grand, colorful events that span three to five days. These celebrations vary widely based on region, religion, and family traditions. During this period, both families come together to participate in numerous rituals that strengthen their newfound bond, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of South Asia.
Here are some of the most common events in a typical Indian wedding:
- Engagement (Roka/Sagai): This is a formal agreement between the families, often involving an exchange of rings and gifts.
- Mehendi: Usually held 1-2 days before the wedding, the bride and female guests have intricate henna designs applied to their hands and feet.
- Sangeet: A musical evening where both families come together to sing, dance, and enjoy performances, often rehearsed by family members.
- Haldi: The bride and groom are separately covered in turmeric paste by their family members for its purifying and beautifying properties.
- Baraat: The groom’s grand procession to the wedding venue, often riding a horse or in a decorated car, accompanied by dancing family and friends.
- Jaimala/Varmala: The bride and groom exchange garlands, symbolizing their acceptance of each other.
- Kanyadaan: The bride’s father gives away his daughter to the groom, entrusting her well-being to him.
- Pheras: The couple walks around the sacred fire four times, each round representing a life goal.
- Sindoor & Mangalsutra: The groom applies red powder (sindoor) to the bride’s hair parting and ties a sacred necklace (mangalsutra), signifying her married status.
- Reception: A grand party after the wedding ceremonies, where guests bless the newlyweds and enjoy a lavish meal.
